IWD.....Do you know what it really means?

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

International Women’s Day (IWD) is marked on March 8 every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.

The first IWD was held on March 19, 1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and some other European countries. This date was chosen by German women because, on that date in 1848, the Prussian king, faced with an armed uprising, had promised many reforms, including votes for women (but this one was unfulfilled).

The IWD started as a political event. Nowadays, it’s perception is changing in the culture of many countries (ex. Russia and the countries of former Soviet bloc). In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour. It became simply an occasion for men to

express their love to the women around them in a way a bit similar to Mother‘s Day and Valentine’s Day mixed together. They are giving to their mothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, colleagues, etc. flowers and small gifts.

Despite of this, there are some countries where the International Women’s Day is still connected with the political and human rights theme. In United Nations it runs strong.
