Rome

Rome is the capital, the largest and the most populous city of Italy. Rome is situated in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula on the Tiber River. Rome is called as Eternal City. It is said, that all road lead to Rome. Rome is the seat of the Italian Government and the official residences of President of the Italian Republic. According to Roman tradition, the city was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus in 753 BC. Rome is full of history with an enormous amount of magnificent ancient Roman monuments. A list of important monuments includes the Pantheon, the Arch of Constantine, the Pyramid of Cestius or Trojan’s Column. We can find there also the ancient Catacombs of Roma underneath the city. There are ancient catacombs or underground burial places. The Roman Pantheon is building, which was built as a temple to all the gods of Ancient Rome. Trojan’s Column is a monument in Rome raised in honour of the Roman emperor Trojan. The Pyramid of Cestius is an ancient pyramid and one of the best preserved ancient buildings in Rome. The Arch of Constantine is a triumphal arch in Rome situated near the Colosseum. The Basilica of Saint Peter, known as St. Peter’s Basilica, is located within the Vatican City. It is iconic dome, which dominates the skyline of Rome. You can visit The Basilica of St. John Lateran, which is the cathedral of the Church of Roma and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope.

One of the symbols of Rome is the Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire. The Colosseum is elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city. It is one of the greatest Works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering. The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests. Now it is a major tourist attraction. The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin.

Rome is also famous for its huge and majestic squares. Famous square is St. Peter’s Square. The striking square and its magnificent colonnade lead to the greatest basilica of the Christian world: St. Peter’s Basilica. It represents the core of Vatican City. In the middle of square, the Egyptian obelisk stands there. Vatican City, the papal residence, was built over the tomb of Saint Peter. It is the smallest state in the world, based in Rome in Italy. The Vatican occupies about on half kilometre of Rome. The city has one of the largest areas of green space amongst European capitals. Rome has a number of regional parks. Rome is a nation wide centre for higher education. There is the first university La Sapienza, the largest university in Europe. There are also pontifical universities and institutes, including the Pontifical Gregorian University. More and more tourists from all over the world take interest about visit this beautiful city. Rome is one of the most remarkable cities in the world.
