It is iconic dome, which dominates the skyline of Rome. One of the symbols of Rome is the Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire. The Colosseum is elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city. It is one of the greatest Works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering. The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests. Now it is a major tourist attraction. In the middle of square, the Egyptian obelisk stands there. Vatican City, the papal residence, was built over the tomb of Saint Peter. It is the smallest state in the world, based in Rome in Italy. The Vatican occupies about on half kilometre of Rome. The city has one of the largest areas of green space amongst European capitals. Rome has a number of regional parks. Rome is a nation wide centre for higher education. There is the first university La Sapienza, the largest university in Europe.
