Venice

Venice is the city in northern Italy and the capital of the region Veneto. This place spreads across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. Venice is world famous for its canals. It is built on an archipelago of 118 islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands on which the Venice is built are connected by about 400 bridges. The most important canal is The Grand Canal. It forms one of the major water traffic corridors in the city. The one of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal is The Rialto Bridges. It is the oldest bridge across the canal and probably the most famous in the city. The Bridge of Sighs is one of many bridges in Venice. The enclosed bridges are made of white limestone and have windows with stone bars. In the old centre the canals serve the function of roads and every form of transport is on water or on foot. Venice is Europe’s largest urban car free area. The classical Venetian boat is the gondola. Now it is very used for tourists or for weddings. A lot of Venetians now travel by motorised waterbuses. Visitors can also take the water taxis between areas of the city.

The principal square of Venice is St. Mark’s Square, which is the most famous. As the central landmark and gathering place for Venice, St. Mark’s Square is extremely popular with tourists, photographers and Venetian pigeons. It has always been the location of all the important offices of the Venetian state and the focus for many of Venice’s festivals. On St. Mark’s Square, there lies the Saint Mark’s Basilica. It is the cathedral of Venice, which is the most famous of the city’s churches.

Venice has also a museum gallery, which is best known as The Accademia. It is situated on the south bank of the Grand Canal. You can find there also The Venetian Arsenal. It is a shipyard and naval depot and it has a leading role in Venetian impire-building. You can see a lot of festivals or events there. The Venice Art Biennale is one of the most important events in the arts calendar and The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world. Venice belongs among the most romantic places in the world. For examples people can be married in St. Mark’s Square in front of the famous basilica, in the city hall situated in the suggestive Palazzo Cavalii, on the Grand Canal or on a gondola. It can be the most beautiful day of your lives.
