officialy known as Slovnaft extraleague /the name of the league is leased to sponsor and changes frequently / is the highest ice hockey league in Slovakia organized by Slovak ice hockey federation. It was set up in 1993 and today consists of 12 regular teams plus Slovak under 20 hockey team. It is unique in the world that such team plays in national extraleague. But as time showed it was quite good idea. Slovak youngsters during two seasons advanced from places at the bottom table on world championship to battles for medals this year. Structure of extraleague is quite simple:
Season begins at the beginning of September and ends in February. Then follows play-off round. Here advance best 8 teams after basic season and they play knock-out system until the final.
